ATM Fraud
How to Prevent ATM Fraud
Most ATM fraud is committed when an account holder has written down their personal identification number (PIN) on their ATM or VISA® Check Card or placed it with their card in a purse or wallet.
If your PIN is easily accessible and your card, purse or wallet is stolen, the thief will have everything needed to abstract money from your banking account.
Safe ATM Banking Tips:
- Do not approach an ATM if suspicious persons are nearby.
- Never accept help from people you do not know while conducting transactions at an ATM. Never trust people you do not know asking for help. This may be a ploy to distract you while their accomplice steals your card and money.
- Carefully look around you before beginning to conduct a transaction. Stand close to the ATM and take precautions to shield your hand as you enter your PIN.
- Never disclose your PIN to anyone.
- Never write your PIN down on your ATM or Visa Check Card or keep a copy of it in your purse or wallet.
- Do not forget to retrieve your ATM or Visa Check Card and receipt from the ATM when your transaction has been completed.
- Notify the Bank immediately if your ATM or Visa Check Card or PIN is lost or stolen.
PHISHING, SPYWARE AND YOUR ATM OR VISA CHECK CARD FRAUD
Fraudsters incorporate old fraud schemes with new ones. Customers are recommended to treat unsolicited e-mails, faxes and letters with a high degree of caution.
Companies will never send a legitimate customer an "urgent" e-mail, fax or letter addressed to "Our Customer," "Frequent Buyer," or "Welcome Company User" with a specific Internet hyperlink requesting that you update your personal security information and provide your account information and PIN.
If you suspect that you have received a phishing e-mail, visit the company's legitimate Web Site's security page and forward the e-mail to the designated security or spoof e-mail address.
Phishing e-mails may contain embedded applications that monitor keystrokes for credit and ATM or Visa Check Card and then report the information back to the fraudster. Protect yourself by purchasing and installing computer security applications such as spam blockers, spyware detection, personal firewalls and the like from a reputable software company.
